There are two Jensen families that both arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 July 1766 aboard a Danish galliot named Der Engel Rafael (Archangel Raphael) under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted. Their relationship to each other, if any, requires further research.
(1) Jochim Diederich Jonsen [sic], son of Matthias Jonsen & Margaretha Wieber, was baptized on 12 June 1766 in St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lübeck.
Matthias Jensen, a farmer, his wife Margaretha, and son Joachim Dietrich (age ¼) arrived in Oranienbaum.
Mattias Jensen, a farmer, and his wife Margaretha are recorded on the 1767 census of Stahl am Tarlyk in Household No. 9. They had settled there on 13 August 1767.
(2) Nikolaus Jensen, a farmer, his wife Butilla, and children (Peter, age 6½; Paul, age ¼; Margaretha Elisabeth, age ¼) arrived in Oranienbaum.
It is not known in which colony, if any, this Jensen family settled.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that both of these Jensen families came from the German region of Holstein. The 1767 census records that Matthias Jensen came from the German village of Welt in the Holstein region.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Jensen family among the Volga German colonies.
