Discussion & Documentation

There are two Kleins who arrived in Lübeck together in 1766 and travelled from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 together. They are presumed to be brothers, but further research is needed to confirm this relationship.

(1) Johann [Konrad] Klein, a single farmer, arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 10 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Nikolaus Peter Pink.

Conrad Klein is recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

(2) Johann [Georg] Klein, a farmer, his wife Anna, and daughters (Anna, age 15; Gertruda, age 10) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 10 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Nikolaus Peter Pink.

Georg Klein, his wife Margaretha, and daughters (Anna Maria, age 15; Catharina, age 10½) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that Georg died in route.

Johann [Konrad] Klein appears to have married the widow of Johann [Georg] Klein.

Konrad Klein, a farmer, his wife Margaretha, and [step-]daughters (Maria, age 15; Elisabeth, age 13) are recorded on a list of Beauregard recruits appended to the 1767 census in Household No. 111 along with a note that they settled in the colony of Wittmann in 1768.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann [Konrad] Klein came from the German region of Hamburg and that Johann [Georg] Klein came from the German region of Mainz. The 1767 census records that Konrad Klein came from the German region of Mainz.

There are no known surviving male lines of either of these Klein families among the Volga German colonies.
