Discussion & Documentation

There are three Martin families that settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Karaman on 22 June 1767. Their relationship to each other, if any, needs further research.

(1) Valentin Martin, a farmer, his wife Elisabeth, and children (Johann, age 22; Melchior, age 20; Elisabeth, age 17½; Magdalena, age 14; Anna, age 10; Anna [again], age 8) arrived from Lübeck in Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig named Christina under the command of Skipper Jacob Stappenberg.

Magdalena Martin (age 14) and her sisters (Anna Katharina, age 12; Margaretha, age 9; Anna, age 5) are recorded on the 1767 census of Stahl am Karaman in Household No. 45 along with their mother and stepfather Johannes Seibel.

Katharina Martin is recorded on the 1798 census of Stahl am Karaman in Household No. Sk37.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Valentin Martin came from the German region of Dienheim.

(2) Johannes Martin and his wife Elisabeth (the widow of Johann Georg Sierwald) are recorded on the 1767 census of Stahl am Karaman in Household No. 46.

They are recorded on the 1798 census of Stahl am Karaman in Household No. Sk04.

In 1790, Michael and Adam Martin moved from Stahl am Karaman to Urbach. They are recorded on the 1798 census of Urbach in Household No. 31. [It is believed that Mchael and Adam are sons of Johannes, but further research is needed to confirm this.]

(3) Wilhelm Martin, a farmer, and his wife Anna Margaretha are recorded on the 1767 census of Stahl am Karaman in Household No. 47.

In 1788, widow Margaretha Martin and her son Friedrich moved from Stahl am Karaman to Engels.

The 1767 census records that these Martin families came from the German region of Dienheim.
