Johann Michael Meckel, a hunter (Jäger), and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig Mercurius under the command of Skipper Christian Heinrich Abelßen.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Tarlyk on 13 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 25.

The 1767 census records that Johann Meckel came from the German village of Baruth in the region of Sachsen (Saxony).
