Nikolaus Peil, a farmer, his wife Margaretha, and children (Elisabeth, age 9; Jakob, age 6) settled in the Volga German colony of Graf on 10 June 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 9.

The 1767 census records that Nikolaus Peil came from the German village of Mannheim in the Kurpfalz region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Peil family among the Volga German colonies.
