There are two Saltzmann families that settled in the Volga German colony of Grimm. The arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 28 July 1766 aboard a Russian pink named Vologda [an historic Russian city] under the command of Lieutenant Sergey Bartenyev. Their relationship to each other is not recorded on the 1767 census, but they are believed to be father and son.
(1) Balthasar Saltzmann, a hammer maker, his wife Brigitta Katharina, and children (Maria Elisabeth, age 20; Gottfried, age 10) arrived in Oranienbaum.
The widow of Balthasar Saltzmann, a craftsmen (Handwerker), and their children are recorded on the 1767 census of Grimm in Household No. 37.
Daughter Maria Elisabeth married widower Kaspar Hepp and is recorded on the 1775 census of Grimm (along with her mother and brother Gottfried) in Household No. 115.
In 1792, Gottfried Saltzmann and his family moved from Grimm to Hussenbach.
(2) Johann Georg Saltzmann & Anna Catharina Röder were married on 4 April 1766 in the Lutheran Church of Büdingen. This wife evidently died before leaving for Russia.

Georg Saltzmann, a craftsmen (Handwerker), and his family are recorded on the 1767 census of Grimm in Household No. 38.
Johann Georg Saltzmann, his wife Elisabeth, and son Johannes (age 8) are recorded on the 1775 census of Grimm in Household No. 116.
As of 1892, the family of Georg Jakob Salzmann (born 18 April 1862 in Grimm) was living in Norka.
Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that both Balthasar and Johann Georg came from the German region of Darmstadt.
