Discussion & Documentation:

There are two Saltzmann families that settled in the Volga German colony of Grimm. The arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 10 August 1766 aboard the Russian pink Vologda under the command of Lieutenant Sergey Bartenyev. Their relationship to each other is not recorded on the 1767 census, but they are believed to be father and son.

(1) Balthasar Saltzmann, his wife Brigitta Katharina, and children (Maria Elisabeth, age 20; Gottfried, age 10) arrived in Oranienbaum. Balthasar died. His widow and children are recorded on the 1767 census of Grimm in Household No. 37. In 1792, Gottfried Saltzmann and his family moved from Grimm to Hussenbach.

Daughter Maria Elisabeth married widower Kaspar Hepp and is recorded on the 1775 census of Grimm (along with her mother and brother Gottfried) in Household No. 115.

(2) Johann Georg Saltzmann & Anna Catharina Röder were married on 4 April 1766 in the Lutheran Church of Büdingen. This wife evidently died before leaving for Russia.

Johann Georg Saltzmann and his wife Elisabeth arrived in Oranienbaum. They are recorded on the 1767 census of Grimm in Household No. 38.

Johann Georg Saltzmann, his wife Elisabeth, and son Johannes (age 8) are recorded on the 1775 census of Grimm in Household No. 116.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that both Balthasar and Johann Georg were hammer makers while the 1767 census records that both of them were craftsmen (Handwerker).

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that both Balthasar and Johann Georg came from the German region of Darmstadt.
