Discussion & Documentation:

Johann Sarselius & Catharina Roth were married on 16 March 1766 in the Lutheran Church in Büdingen as groups of German immigrants were gathering to migrate to Russia.

Johann Sarselius, a butcher, and his wife Katharina arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Schilling.  Johann died, and Katharina remarried to Philipp Weltz. Philipp Weltz, Katharina, and her two children by Johann Sarselius (Christian, age 7½; Ambrosius, age 5) are recorded on the 1775 census of the Volga German colony of Schilling in Household No. 85 along with the child of Philipp & Katharina Weltz (Barbara, age ½).

Researcher "Habermann" reports on the wolgadeutsche.net forum that Barbara Wels, born on 12 September 1774, was the daughter of Johann Philipp Wels and Katharina Roth.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Sarselius came from the German region of Riedesel.

This surname seems to be erroneously translated as Schargenus in some sources.
