Nikolaus Schamne (age 36), a farmer, his wife Margaretha (age 30), and son Peter (age 1½) are recorded on the 1767 census of Louis in Household No. 12. They had arrived in Louis on 14 June 1766. [Igor Plehve suggests that this surname should be translated as Chaminé.]
In 1788, Anton Schamne moved from Graf to Mariental.
Nikolaus Schamne, son of the deceased Nikolaus Schamne, and his mother are recorded on the 1798 census of Graf in Household No. Gf24.
Descendants of the Schamne family in Graf moved to Herzog.
Simon Schamne from Louis is recorded on the 1798 census of Mariental in Household No. Mt16.
The 1767 census records that Nikolaus Schamne came from the German region of Trier.
Several researchers have connected Nikolaus Schamne to someone named Josephus Nicolaus Chamonee whose baptism is recorded in Sankt Maria-Ablass (Indulgence of St. Mary) Catholic Church in Köln which is located in the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Köln is located about 200 kilometers northeast of the city of Trier.
Other researchers have connected Nikolaus Schamne to someone with the following entry in the parish register of Hüttersdorf:
Anno 1736 die vigesima secunda Septembris baptizavi Nicolaum filium legitimum Francisci Schamne et Eva Catharina coniugum quem de sacro fonre levarunt Nicolaus Vogt et Catharina Paulus ambo ex dieto Hÿdersdorf. J. W Ewers pastor loci.
[On 22 September 1736, I baptized Nicolaus, the legitimate son of Franz Schamne and his wife Eva Catharina with godparents Nicolaus Vogt and Catharina Paulus, both from Hÿdersdorf (Hüttersdorf). J.W. Ewers, local priest]
Hüttersdorf is located about 50 kilometers south of Trier and was located in the Diocese of Trier and therefore seems like a much more probable origin for this family than Köln.
The parish register of Hüttersdorf also records the marriage on 8 February 1764 of Nicolaus Schamne, son of Johann Franz Schamne, to Margaretha Leidinger, daughter of Johann Adam Leidinger.
