Discussion & Documentation

Johann Georg Schanzenbach, son of Georg Michael & Anna Elisabeth Schanzenbach, was born and baptized on 18 August 1725 in Waldbach, a small village near Heilbronn. He married to Maria Katharina Braun, daughter of Michael Braun, on 6 July 1751 in the Lutheran Church in the neighboring village of Ellhofen.

They had three children, each baptized in Ellhofen: (1) Georg David (born 17 May 1752; baptized 19 May 1752); (2) Johann Michael (baptized 19 April 1755); and (3) Georg Simon (baptized 27 October 1759).

Johann Georg and his family immigrated to Denmark, departing from Altona in the Duchy of Holstein on 15 May 1761 under the leadership of Johann Nikolaus Ernst. All of them, but Johann Michael, arrived in the city of Schleswig, Duchy of Schleswig, on 20 May 1761.

The baptism of Johann Georg Schanzenberg [sic], son of Johann Georg Schanzenbach & Maria Catharina Braun is recorded in the parish register of St. Michael's Church in the city of Schleswig on 6 July 1763. He died on 8 November 1763. Maria Catharina Schanzrenbach [sic] née Braun died there on 4 June 1764.

The marriage of Georg Schanzenbach & Susanna Catharina Keller is recorded in the parish register of St. Michael's Church in the city of Schleswig in 1764.

The Schanzenbach family is recorded in Denmark until 22 Apr 1765, when they immigrated to Russia.

During the journey to the Volga German colonies, son Georg Simon also died. They arrived in Galka on 12 April 1766 and are recorded there on 1767 census in Household No. 64.

Johann Georg died at some point before 1798. His son Georg David is recorded on Galka 1798 census in Household No. Gk41.
