Schlegel (Messer)
Conrad Schlegel, his wife Christina, and children (Louisa, age 24; Johann, age 16; Dorothea, age 8; Maria, age 6) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Messer on 18 June 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census along with 3 children (Johannes, Anna Dorothea, and Anna Elisabeth) in Household No. 53.
The family of Johannes Schlegel, son of Konrad Schlegel, is recorded on the 1798 census of Messer in Household No. Ms58.
The baptism of Maria Elisabeth Schlegel, daughter of Conrad & Christina Schlegel, is recorded on 4 October 1760 in Buches near Büdingen. It is believed that she is the daughter recorded as Maria in Oranienbaum and incorrectly recorded as Anna Elisabeth in Messer.
The 1767 census records that Konrad Schlägel came from the German district of Isenburg.
