There are two Schlegel families that settled in the colony of Pobochnaya on 4 July 1773. They have the same name, but are uncle and nephew. They had arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 2 July 1772 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Hartwig.

(1) Frantz Schlegel, son of Conrad Schlegel, was baptized in Roth on 7 December 1721. Anna Dorothea Köhler, daughter of Johann Peter Köhler, was baptized in Roth on 26 March 1724.

Frantz Schlegel and Anna Dorothea Köhler married in Roth on 7 March 1748.  Frantz and Anna Dorothea had seven children, all born in Roth: (1) Johannes, born 14 March1749, baptized 16 March 1749; (2) Johann Friedrich, born 9 May 1751, baptized 13 May 1751; (3) Anna Maria, born 3 April 1755, baptized 6 April 1755; (4) Johann Conrad, born 29 August 1757, baptized 1 September 1757; (5) Johann Georg, born 28 July 1761, baptized 31 July 1761; (6) Elisabetha, born & baptized 18 December 1763; and (7) Catharina, born 16 July 1766, baptized 20 July 1766.

Franz Schlegel, his wife Anna Dorothea Keller, and children (Johann, age 23; Friedrich, age 21; Konrad, age 15; Anna Maria, age 11¼; Johann Georg, age 11; Elisabeth, age 10; Katharina, age 6) arrived in Oranienbaum.

This Franz Schlegel and his family are recorded on the 1773 list of Pobocynaya settlers in Household No. 15.

(2) Frantz Schlegel, son of Conrad Schlegel (the brother of the above Frantz Schlegel), was born in Roth on 13 July 1742 and baptized on 15 July 1742. Frantz married Maria Eva [surname unclear] on 23 February 1764. Maria Eva died on 6 April 1766. Frantz Schlegel remarried to Julianna Loos, daughter of Valentin Loos, on 10 July 1766.

Frantz and Julianna had three children, all born in Roth: (1) Anna Margaretha, born 9 May 1767, baptized 13 May 1767; (2) Conrad, born 6 September 1768, baptized 11 September 1768; and (3) Anna Maria, born 31 August 1771, baptized 4 September 1771. 

Franz Schlegel, his wife Juliana Laib [sic], and children (Anna Margaretha, age 6½; Konrad, age 5; Anna Maria, age 1) arrived in Oranienbaum.

This Franz Schlegel and his family are recorded on the 1773 list of Pobocynaya settlers in Household No. 16.
