Discussion & Documentation

Jakob Steinbach was born in 1723 in Dannstadt, Pfalz (southwest of Mannheim). He married Maria Katharina Heutmars on 10 February 1750 in the Dannstadt Catholic Church. They have four children, each born/baptized in Dannstadt: (1) Johann Michael, baptized 18 December 1750; (2) Maria Magdalena, baptized 18 March 1752; (3) Johann Nikolaus, born 23 February 1755; baptized 24 February 1755; and (4) Elisabetha, baptized 24 December 1757.

Jakob's wife died before 1759 and he remarried to Maria Eva Fuche on 18 September 1759 in the Dannstadt Catholic Church. They had two additional children, both baptized in Dannstadt: (1) Heinrich Michael, baptized 29 June 1762; and (2) Maria Rosina, baptized 7 August 1765.

Jakob and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard a Russian packet-boat named Svyatoi Pavel (St. Paul) under the command of the Lieutenant Fyedor Sornev. Some of the children died before embarking or during the transport to Russia. Only Jakob Steinbach, his wife Maria Eva and the children Maria Magdalena and Johann Nikolaus Steinbach reached Oranienbaum, according to Kuhlberg's document No. 2711.

During the transport from Oranienbaum to the Volga German colonies, a new baby was born and he was given the name Johann Adam.

The Steinbach family arrived in Sewald on 20 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 13.

Jakob and his wife died before 1798, as they are not recorded on the 1798 Sewald census. His sons are registered there in Household Nos. Sd28 and Sd30.

The 1767 census records that Jakob Steinbach came from the German village of Dannstadt in the Pfalz region.
