Discussion & Documentation:

There are two Steinbiess families that settled in the Volga German colony of Jost on 5 July 1767. They are assumed to be father and son, but further research is needed to confirm this relationship.

(1) Georg Steinbiess (age 52), a farmer, his wife Johanna Sophia, and sons (Johann Gottlieb, age 14; Johann Immanuel, age 11) are recorded on the 1767 census of Jost in Household No. 4.

Gottlieb Steinbiess and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Jost in Household No. Jo24.

(2) Christian [sic] Steinbiess (age 20), a farmer, and his wife Katharina are recorded on the 1767 census of Jost in Household No. 5.

Christoph [sic] Steinbiess and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Jost in Household No. Jo37.

The 1767 census records that both of these Steinbiess families came from the German village of Kakau in the Dessau region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
