Discussion & Documentation

There are 3 Wittenbeck families that settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 27 August 1766. Their relationship to each other, if any, is not recorded.

(1) Johann Wittenbeck (age 49), a mason (Maurer), is wife Elisabeth Götsch, and children (Johann, age 20; Christian, age 15; Andreas, age 11) are recorded on the 1767 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 39.

In 1782, Andreas Wittenbeck left Katharinenstadt.

Christian Wiedenbeck and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. Ka057.

(2) Johann Wettenbeck [sic] & Sophia Christine Schreiber were married on 23 September 1765 in Roßlau.

Johannes Wittenbeck (age 24), a tailor (Schneider), his wife Sophia Schreiber, and son Andeas (age 1) are recorded on the 1767 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 40.

(3) Widower Heinrich Wittenbeck (age 22) [occupation not recorded], is recorded on the 1767 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 176.

The death of Johann Heinrich Wiedenbeck in 1833 is recorded on the 1834 census of Biberstein in Household No. 109.

The 1767 census records that all three of these families came from the German village of Eckersdorf in the Bayreuth region.
