Johann Michael Wittmann (age 20), a single craftsman (Handwerker), settled in the Volga German colony of Herzog on 14 July 1766 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 30. A note on the 1767 census records that his father Georg Wittmann had died on the way to the colony and that his unnamed mother had died in Herzog on 29 September 1766.

Michael Wittmann and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Herzog in Household No. Hr09.

Michael's sons are recorded on the 1834 census of Herzog in Households No. 46, 49, 76, 77, & 82.

The 1850 census of Herzog records in Household No. 107 that Michael Wittmann relocated to the colony of Friedental.

The 1767 census records that Johann Michael Wittmann came from the German village of Regensburg.
