Discussion & Documentation

Joseph Wolf, a maker of braid (Posamenter), his wife Margaretha, and children (Anna, age 11; Christina, age 4; Johann, age 2¼) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 August 1766 aboard a galliot named Eva Maria under the command of Skipper Franz Christopher Schröder.

Joseph Wolff [sic], his wife Margaretha, and daughters (Anna, age 11; Christina, age 4) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 3 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 163 along with his new wife Margaretha Keifer and son Franz (age 6-weeks).

Joseph Wolf, his wife Margaretha née Keifer, and children (Anna Maria, age 19; Christina, age 16; Franz Joseph, age 9) are recorded on the 1776 Katharinenstadt Grundbuch [Land Register] in Household No. 61. The register also records that daughter Anna Maria married Jakob Krämer from Beauregard in 1776 and their son Joseph was born 26 November 1776. It also records that daughter Christina married in 1778 to Christoph Dorn from Orlovskaya.

The 1767 census records that Joseph Wolf came from the German region of Zweibrücken. The 1776 Katharinenstadt Land Register records that Joseph Wolf came from Statzbach in the German region of Würzburg and that Margaretha née Keifer came from the German region of Eußenheim in the region of Würzburg which is also where their children were born.
