Bittel (Wittmann-2)*

Johannes Caspar Büttel, son of Heinrich Büdel [sic] & Anna Margaretha Hessberger, was baptized in Orb on 28 February 1740. He married there in St. Martin's Church to Anna Barbara Hinterlang, daughter of Johannes Hinterlang & Margaretha Schüssler, on 20 June 1763. The baptism of Anna Barbara Hinterlang is also recorded on the parish register in Orb on 6 June 1742.

The baptism of one son to Johannes Caspar Büttel & Anna Barbara Hinterlang is recorded in the parish register of Orb: Johann, baptized 8 September 1764.

Kaspar Pittel, a stonemason (Maurer), his wife Barbara, and son Johann (age 2) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

Caspar Pittel [sic], his wife Barbara, and son Johannes (age 2½) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They are recorded on the 1767 list of Beauregard recruits in Household No. 124 along with a note that they settled in the colony of Wittmann.

In 1787, Kaspar Pittel and his family moved from Luzern to Schönchen.

Kaspar Bittel from Luzern and his stepchildren are recorded on the 1798 census of Schönchen in Household No. Sn15.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Kaspar Pittel came from the German region of Mainz while the Beauregard list records that he came from the German village of Orb.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Bittel family among the Volga German colonies.
