During the Reformation, within the borders of modern Thuringia the Roman Catholic faith survived in the Eichsfeld district only, which was ruled by the Archbishop of Mainz. Heiligenstadt is located within this Eichsfeld district. Today, reflecting its official spa designation, the town is known as Heilbad Heiligentadt.
