Discussion & Documentation

Johann[es] Arnhold, son of Friedrich Arnhold, was born in Herzhausen, Darmstadt, Hessen. He married 25 January 1763 to Anna Katharina Michelbächer, daughter of Eckhard Michelbächer (d. 16 December 1765) & Margarethe Weber (b. 17 May 1668). She was born 28 September 1733 in Darmstadt.

They have two children recorded in Herzhausen: (1) Hans Ludwig, born 16 December 1759; and (2) Johannes, born 18 October 1763.

Johann Arnold, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Ludwig, age 8; Johann, age 3; Anna, age ¾) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the galliot Anna Katharina under the command of Skipper Johann Joachim Janson.

Johannes Arnhold, his wife Catharina, and sons (Ludewig [sic], age 8; Johannes, age 3) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Ernestinendorf on 3 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 22 along with newborn son Jakob (age 1 month).

In 1769, Johann Arnold and his family moved from Ernestinendorf to Schönchen.

In 1786, Johann Arnold and his family moved from Paulskaya to the Caucasus. They returned and settled in Biberstein.

The 1798 census of Enders records Johann Arnold from Paulskaya in Household No. En07.

The 1798 census of Biberstein records Johann Georg Arnold from Paulskaya in Household No. Bb25 along with a note that his son had lived in Schwed.

There are several Arnold families from Enders in Neu-Bauer after 1858.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Arnold came from the German region of Darmstadt.
