Discussion & Documentation

There are two Essig families recorded on the 1775 census of the Volga German colony of Schilling. They both immigrated first to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein) arriving in Flensburg on 7 November 1761. They are last recorded among the Danish colonies on 10 June 1763.

(1) Johann Georg Essig, his wife Anna Maria, and daughter Louisa (age 19) are recorded on the 1775 Schilling census in Household No. 58 along with a note that their house had burned down in 1767.

Louisa Winter Hildebrandt née Essig and her family are recorded on the 1798 census of Schilling in Household No. Sg059.

The Eichhorns record that Johann Georg Essig came from "Sulzfeld, Ritterlicher Kanton Kraichgau, Herrschaft von Göler von Ravensburg."

(2) The parish register of Handewitt [Denmark] records on 14 February 1762 the baptism of Anna Margaretha Elisabeth Essich [sic], daughter of Johann Michael & Anna Elisabeth Essich [sic].

Johann Michael Essig, his wife Anna Elisabeth, and their daughters (Eva Margaretha, age 16; Maria Sophia, age 9½; Eva Katharina, age 7½; Anna Maria Rosina, age 5½) are recorded on the 1775 Schilling census in Household No. 57 along with a note that their house too had burned down in 1767.

Maria Sophia Deibert née Essig and her family are recorded on the 1798 census of Schilling in Household No. Sg064.

Katharina Hammerschmidt Heilmann née Essig and her family are recorded on the 1798 census of Dehler in Household No. Dl35.

The Eichhorns record that Michael Essig came from the German region of Hessen-Darmstadt, having lived in the village of Büxhausen just before departing for Denmark.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Essig family among the Volga German colonies.
