Johann Christian Herting, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and daughter Maria Elisabeth (age12) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 July 1766 aboard a snow-brig named Mercurius under the command of Skipper Christian Heinrich Abelßen.
Only daughter Elisabeth Katharina survived to settle in the Volga German colony of Urbach on 3 July 1767 where she is recorded on the 1767 census in Household No. 50 with a note that she is living with the Michael Totei family. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Herting and Totei families.
The 1767 census records that Elisabeth Katharina Herting came from the German village of Halle in the Brandenburg region.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Herting family among the Volga German colonies.
