Discussion & Documentation:

Bernhard Kunkel from Umstadt & Anna Elisabetha Ruchling, daughter of Conrad Ruchling, were married in Langendiebach on 15 June 1740.  Among their children were (1) Johannes, born 13 December 1742, baptized 16 December 1742; and (2) Johann Caspar, born 8 March 1745, baptized 10 March 1745.

These two sons arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig named Christina under the command of Skipper Jacob Stappenberg. They settled in the Volga German colony of Kutter.

(1) Kaspar Kunkel, a single farmer, arrived in Kutter on 8 July 1767 and is recorded on the 1767 census there in Household No. 10 along with his new wife Barbara [Dietz].

The widow and children of Kaspar Kunkel are recorded on the 1798 census of Kutter in Household No. Kt20.

(2) Johannes Kunkel, a farmer, and his wife Anna settled in Kutter on 16 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 71.

Johannes Kunkel from Kutter and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Lauwe in Household No. Lw19.

Johann[es] Kunkel and his family are recorded on the 1811 census of Lauwe in Household No. 19.

Johann Friedrich Kunkel, son of Johannes Kunkel, is recorded on the 1811 census of Lauwe in Household No. 19 along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Hildmann in 1811.

In 1790, Konrad Kunkel and his family (related to one of the above families?) moved from Kutter to Lauwe.

The Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that both of these Kunkel families came from the German region of Isenburg.
