There are several inter-related Zieg families that immigrated to Russia from the German village of Hüttengesäß.
(1) Johann Caspar Zieg married 12 June 1727 in Hüttengesäß to Catharina Kuhn, daughter of Johann Jost Kuhn & Elisabeth Gerd. Catharina Kuhn had been baptized in Hüttengesäß on 14 August 1711.
The baptisms of at least two sons to Johann Casper Zieg & Catharina Kuhn are recorded in the parish registers of Hüttengesäß: (a) Ernst baptized 17 October 1728; and (b) Philipp, baptized 14 December 1730.
(a) Ernst Zieg, son of Johann Caspar Zieg & Catharina Kuhn, was baptized 17 October 1728 in Hüttengesäß. He married 11 March 1750 in Hüttengesäß to Anna Alt, daughter of Johann Alt. She had been born on 24 March 1732 in Neu-Wiedermus. They had two children: (1) Anna, born about 1752; and (2) Philipp, born about 1759.
Ernst Zieg, his wife Anna, and children (Anna & Philipp) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the galliot named Kronshlot under the command of Skipper Ivan Kunakovskii.
Only son Philipp survived the journey to Balzer where he is recorded on the 1767 census in Household No. 6.
(b) Philipp Zieg, son of Johann Caspar Zieg & Catharina Kuhn, was baptized in Hüttengesäß on 14 December 1730. He married there on 22 February 1764 to Magdalena Horr, daughter of Henrich Horr & Anna Barbara Gerd. She was baptized in Hüttengesäß on 4 September 1741.
Philipp Zieg and his family (including his mother Katharina) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the galliot named Kronshlot under the command of Skipper Ivan Kunakovskii.
They are recorded (along with Philipp's mother) in Household No. 6 of the 1767 census of Balzer. They had arrived in Balzer on 1 July 1767.
(2) Johann Georg Zieg, son of Johann Caspar & Catharina Zieg, was baptized in Hüttengesäß on 28 December 1739. He married in nearby Eckartshausen on 5 March 1766 to Catharina Bohn, the daughter of Johann Georg & Margaretha Bohn. She was baptized in Eckartshausen on 10 September 1747. This couple is recorded on the 1767 Census of Messer in Household No. 73, having arrived there on 18 June 1767.
Johann Georg Zieg and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.
(3) Kaspar Zieg, son of Johann Caspar & Anna Margaretha Zieg, was baptized in Hüttengesäß on 12 July 1744. He married Catharina Schibel in Eckartshausen on 5 March 1766, the same day as Johann Georg Zieg married his bride. This couple is recorded on the 1767 Census of Messer in Household No. 71, having arrived there on 18 June 1767.
Kaspar Zieg and his family arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.
(4) Anna Maria Zieg married Friedrich Protsmann [Brotzmann]. Their son (Philipp, baptized 4 October 1729 in Hüttengesäß) immigrated to Russia. [See Brotzmann Family.]
