Biography: 

Pastor Johann Salomo Kufeld was born on 8 July 1868 in Schwed. He was one of the first Volga German Protestant pastors who was himself a Volga German. His father served for almost 50 years as the school teacher in Schwed.

He studied theology at the University of Dorpat (Estonia) from 25 August 1889 to 16 August 1894. He served as vicar under Pastor Stahf in Grimm from 1894-1895 and was ordained on 30 April 1895. From 1894 to 1897, Pastor Kufeld served as the adjunct to the Probst in Saratov. He served the congregations in Reinhard (1897-1908) and Nikolaiev-Kherson in the Odessa District (1911-1919).

He died on 17 November 1919 in Nikolaiev am Herzschlag (Ukraine) and was buried there.

Pastor Kufeld is the author of the book Die Deutschen Kolonien an der Wolga which recounts the history of the Volga German colonists (1911).
