History: 

Founded in 1879, Kostanai is located on the Tobol River in northern Kazakhstan near the Russian boarder. Kostanay is a city located on the Tobol River in northern Kazakhstan

The original name of the settlement was Nikolayevsk. In 1895, it was renamed to Kustanai. Its original settlers were mostly farmers and the region is still heavily involved in agricultural production. On 17 June 1997, the name was changed to Kostanai.

Volga German families who had been deported to Siberia and Kazakhstan in 1941 began relocating to Kostanai in the 1950s following implementation of Soviet agricultural incentives for development of the region. As of 2018, approximately 2.3% of the population of Kostanai remains ethnically German.
