Foos (Dietel)

Johann Jakob Foos, son of Wilhelm Foos & Anna Elisabetha Neuss, was baptized on 14 April 1720 in Heimkirchen. He married on 29 April 1749 in Heimkirchen to Maria Christina Stetzenbach, daughter of Johann Jacob Stetzenbach & Anna Catharina Geipp. Maria Christina Stetzenbach had been born on 21 December 1722 in Ingweiler.

The births of 7 children are recorded in the parish register of Heimkirchen: (1) Johannes, born 29 March 1750; (2) Anna Elisabetha, born 17 September 1752; (3) Maria Christina, born 13 October 1754; (4) Johann Jacob, born 21 October 1756, died 3 March 1759; (5) Maria Margaretha, born 2 May 1759; (6) Johann Jacob, born 2 October 1761; and (7) Johann Adam, born 16 December 1763.

[14 April (1720) Wilhelm Foos from Heimkirchen and his legal wife had a son baptized. Name: Johann Jacob. Godparents: Johann Jacob Herberth, schoolmaster (?) in Heimkirchen; Jacob Stetzenbach from the Stein/stone mill; Catharina Elisabetha Hohenberger from Niederkirchen].

Jakob Foos, a farmer, his wife Christina, and children (Johann, age 17; Anna Elisabeth, age 14; Christina, age 11; Margaretha, age 9; Johann Jakob, age 6; Johann Adam, age 3) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig Mercurius under the command of Skipper Christian Heinrich Abelßen.

Johann Foos (age 18), a farmer, his wife Appolonia, and siblings (Anna Elisabeth, age 16; Christina, age 14; Johann Adam, age 4) are recorded on the 1767 census of Dietel in Household No. 29. Another sibling, Anna Margaretha (age 9) is recorded on the 1767 census of Dietel in Household No. 19 along with the Wendel Brauchbacher family. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Foos and Brauchbacher families.

[There is some confusion about from whom the family in Dietel descends. Johann Foos is recorded in 1767 as age 18 (born about 1749) - which matches the oldest son of Johann Jakob. However, Johannes Foos is recorded in 1798 as age 67 (born about 1731); Johannes Foos is recorded in 1811 as age 80 (born about 1731); Johannes Foos is recorded in 1834 as age 102 (born about 1732). His age on these last 3 censuses corresponds with neither the son or his father.]

In 1795, Georg Foos moved from Dietel to Merkel. He is recorded on the 1798 census of Merkel in Household No. Mr12.

Anna Margaretha Foos is recorded on the 1798 census of Merkel in Household No. Mr11 as the wife of Georg Adam.

[There is an Anna Margaretha Foos (age 5) recorded on the 1767 census of Kratzke in Household No. 43 along with the Heinrich Samuel Niedens family. However, the father of this Foos child is recorded as "Johann Jakob Foos who is living in the colony of Forsteher (mayor) Schuck," and there is a Johann Jakob Foos recorded in Household No. 37 on the 1767 census of the colony of Schuck, of which Jakob Schuck is the Forsteher (mayor).]

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Jakob Foos came from the German region of Pfalz.
