Before 1945, Kaliningrad was known as Königsberg and was located in Germany. Following World War II, the German population of Königsberg was expelled, and the population today is primarily Russian. From 1701 to 1773, it was located in the Kingdom of Prussia, the successor state to Brandenburg-Prussia.
