Franz Hartwig, a farmer, and his family (including his mother-in-law) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 15 September 1766 aboard the snow-brig Die Frau Dietrika under the command of Skipper Joachim Friedrich Luhn.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Köhler on 10 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 17.
In 1788, Sebastian Hartwig moved from Köhler to Semenovka. In 1791, Johannes Hartwig moved from Köhler to Volmer. In 1794, widower Franz Hartwig moved from Köhler to Kraft. The 1798 census of Göbel records Franz Hartwig from Köhler in Household No. Gb08.
Peter Hartwig and his family are recorded on the 1857 census of Köhler in Household No. 199 along with a note that they relocated to the daughter colony of Marienfeld in 1852.
