Johann Georg [sic] Hertel, a tailor (Schneider), and his wife Elisabeth arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 7 May 1766 aboard the galliot named Anna Katharina under the command of Skipper Daniel Heyer.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Orlovskaya on 5 March 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 72.
The 1834 census of Orlovskaya (Household No. 22) records that the entire family of Andreas Hertel was living in Ober-Monjou.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Georg [sic] Hertel came from the German region of the Pfalz. The 1767 census records that Gottfried [sic] Hertel came from the German village of Auerbach in the Pfalz region.
