Over the years, many Volga German families have moved into Salina, the largest town in the region.

Many Volga German families settled in and around Russell beginning in 1876.

Ramona was founded in 1887 along the Rock Island Railroad.

Plains was founded in 1885, and Volga German families began to move there from Topeka and other areas after 1900.

The town of Pfeifer is located 10 miles south of Victoria on the south bank of the Smoky Hill River. It was founded in August 1876 (there is some discrepancy as to whether it was August 21 or August 24) by the following men, with the number of people in the family indicated in parenthesis:

Peabody was established in 1879 and named in honor of F.H. Peabody, and officer with the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway.
