Hoffgesang*

Johan Hinr. Langweiter [sic], a farmer from the area of Darmstadt, & Anna Elisab. Hoffgesang from the area of Darmstadt were married on 3 June 1766 in a house in Lübeck. The marriage is recorded in the parish register of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church in Lübeck.

Konrad Hoffgesang, a miller, his wife Anna, and daughter Anna (age 24) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

Gedicke (Unknown)*

Johann August Gedick [sic], his wife Magdalena, and daughter Maria (age 1¼) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 September 1766.

Joh. August Keticke [sic] and his wife Magdalena are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Johann August Gedeke and his wife Anna are recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Kaneau in Household No. 19.

It is not known in which colony they settled.

The 1767 census records that Johann August Gedeke came from the town of Wien (Vienna) [Austria].

Batt (Schaffhausen)*

Widow Anna Batt and her daughters (Anna, age 16½; Eva, age 12; Katharina, age 8; Elisabeth, age 6) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of skipper Thomas Fairfax.

Widow Anna Mar. Bat [sic] and her daughters (Anna Margaretha, age 16½; Katharina, age 8; Elisabetha, age 6) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that the mother and daughter Katharina died en route.

Jung (Näb)

Johann Heinrich Jung, a farmer, and his wife Eva (age 26) are recorded on the 1767 census of Philippsfeld in Household No. 26 along with a note that they relocated to the colony of Näb in 1768.

In 1769, Georg Jung and his family moved from Philippsfeld to Zürich. This Georg is believed to be the same person of Johann Heinrich because Eva Elisabeth Steinroth (age 56), widow of an unnamed Jung, is recorded on the 1798 census of Zürich in Household No. Zr03 along with her son Wilhelm Jung and his family.

Bessemer, Jefferson Co., Alabama

Bessemer was officially incorporated on 9 September 1887. It was named after Henry Bessemer, an Englishman whose steel-making process was the standard for almost 100 years (from 1856-1950).

Today, Bessemer is a southwestern suburb of Birmingham.

Alois Braun from Herzog and his family moved to Alabama before 1905 and the families of several of his children still live in the area.
