There are several German villages with the name Gersfeld. This one is located in the district of Fulda on the Rhön River. Several Volga German families came from this Gersfeld.
Gersfeld was historically located in the Duchy of Hessen-Nassau.

The baroque Lutheran church in Gersfeld was designed by Johann Caspar Heym in 1778 and built in 1780–88 by master builder Johannes Link from Brückenau. It was rebuilt in 1857 by Ludwig Ratzmann and again reconstructed in 1965 by Werner Bosch. The most recent restoration was completed in 2010 by A. Voigt.
There are 5 bells in the church tower. The clock that is currently located in the church tower dates to 1899.
The choir wall was designed and built by the wood sculptor Georg Gorten from Bischofsheim and the carver and carpenter Nikolaus Zitzmann from Gersfeld.
The organ has around 2,000 pipes and 30 registers. It was built by master organ builder Johann Michael Wagner from Schmittfeld near Schleusingen and was dedicated on 17 June 1787.
