Jakob Dinkel, a craftsman (Handwerker), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Herzog on 14 July 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 20 along with his stepchildren Peter, Martin, and Elisabeth Beier.

In 1786, Jakob Dinkel and his family moved from Herzog to Leichtling.

The 1767 census records that Jakob Dinkel came from the German town of Mannheim in the Kurpfalz region.
