There are two Hammerschmidt families that settled in the Volga German colony of Zug. They arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard an English frigate under the command of Skipper Adam Beerfeier and travelled together from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

(1) Zacharias Hammerschmidt, a hammer maker (Hammerschmied), was born in Warstein as Zacharias Möller. He married (as Zacharias Mölloer) on 26 June 1741 in St. Nikolauskirche (St. Nikolaus Church) of Rüthen to Anna Sybilla Schinne [some documents include alternate spellings of Schenne and Schinneke]. She had been born in Rüthen on 15 November 1716.

The births of the following children to Zacharias Möller and Anna Sybilla Schinne are recorded in Rüthen: (1) Anna Margaretha, born 28 December 1746; (2) Antonius Rodgerus, born 25 [month illegible] 1749; (3) Johannes Reinhardus, born 7 May 1752; (4) Anna Angela, born 12 [month illegible] 1755; and (5) Elisabeth, born 12 [month illegible] 1757.

Anna Sybilla died and Zacharias Möller remarried on 25 July 1763 in St. Johanneskirche (St. John's Church) of Rüthen to Catharina Wilhelmina Marx. She had been born on 29 March 1744 in Rüthen.

The births of the following child of Zacharias Möller and Catharina Wilhelmina Marx are recorded in Rüthen: (1) Heinrich Anton, born 19 May 1765.

The family immigrated to Russia, and all documents from that point forward record the surname of Zacharias and his family as Hammerschmidt.

Zacharias Hammerschmidt, a miller, his wife Wilhelmina, and children (Anna, age 20; Anton, age 18; Reinhard, age 13; Elisabeth, age 9; Anton, age 1) arrived in Oranienbaum.

Zacharias Hammerschmidt, his wife Wilhelmina, and children (Anna Margaretha, age 20; Joh. Anton, age 19; Reinhard, age 14; Elisabetha, age 10) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Zacharius Hammerschmidt, a farmer, his wife Wilhelmina, and children (Anton, age 20; Reinhardt, age 15; Elisabeth, age 12) are recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Kaneau in Household No. 14.

In 1771, widow Wilhelmina Hammerschmidt and her children moved from Zug to Schönchen.

In 1773, Johann Reinhardt Hammerschmidt moved from Zug to Wittmann.

Reinhardt Hammerschmidt and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Wittmann in Household No. Wm18.

In 1789, Heinrich Hammerschmidt moved from Zug to Luzern.

Heinrich Hammerschmidt from Zug and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Luzern in Household No. Lz24.

Anton Hammerschmidt and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Zug in Household No. Zg33. Johannes Hammerschmidt, believed to be a son of Anton, and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Zug in Household No. Zg11.

(2) Anton Hammerschmidt, a soldier of the Electorate of Köln (Kurkölnischer Soldat), married on 28 June 1734 in Kallenhardt to Gertrud Hester.

The baptisms of the following children to Anton Hammerschmidt & Gertrud Hester are recorded in Kallenhardt: (1) Anna Maria Elisabeth, (illegitimate) baptized on 12 July 1728; and (2) Anna Margaretha, baptized 30 June 1737.

Gertrude Hammerschmidt née Hester died 15 March 1741, and Anton Hammerschmidt remarried with the permission of his captain on 27 June 1742 in St. Nikolauskirche (St. Nikolaus Church) of Rüthen to Eva Maria Volmerding.

The baptisms of the following children of Anton Hammerschmidt & Eva Maria Volmerding are recorded in St. Nikolauskirche of Rüthen: (1) Anna Margaretha, baptized 9 May 1743; (2) Elisabeth, baptized 25 January 1745; (3) Maria Margaretha, baptized 18 March 1748; (4) Maria Agnes, baptized 13 May 1752; and (5) Maria Elisabeth, baptized 4 February 1755.

Eva Maria Hammerschmidt née Volmerding died 3 April 1756. Anton Hammerschmidt remarried on 17 June 1756 in St. Nikolauskirche of Rüthen to Anna Maria Tilmann from Altenrüthen. She had been born 30 July 1747 in Altenrüthen.

The baptisms of the following children of Anton Hammerschmidt & Anna Maria Tilmann are recorded in St. Nikolauskirche of Rüthen: (1) Nikolaus, baptized 1 September 1760; and (2) Johann Heinrich, baptized 13 February 1764.

Anton Hammerschmidt sold his house in Rüthen to the Tilmann family (of his wife) in order to finance immigration to Russia.

Anton Hammerschmidt, a farmer, his wife Anna, and sons (Nikolaus, age 6; Heinrich, age 2½) arrived in Oranienbaum.

Anton Hammerschmiedt [sic], his wife Maria Margaretha, and sons (Nicolaus, age 7; Heinrich, age 3) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Anton Hammerschmidt, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Nikolaus, age 7; Heinrich, age 3) are recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Kaneau in Household No. 16.

In 1782, Nikolaus Hammerschmidt moved from Zug to Schönchen.

Nikolaus Hammerschmidt and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Schönchen in Household No. Sn20. There are no known surviving male lines of Nikolaus Hammerschmidt.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that these Hammerschmidt families came from the Köln region while the 1767 census records that they came from the German village of Rödern [Rüthen].
