Discussion & Documentation

There were two Schlager families travelling together from Germany to Russia. They are believed to be mother and son.

Widow Anna Schlager and her children Margaretha (age 18) and Johann [Kaspar] (age 15), along with Anna's sister's son Johann (age 9) [surname not recorded] are recorded on the Oranienbaum passenger list next to Konrad Schlager, a farmer, and his wife Magdalena. They arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 13 September 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Johann Grapp.

Conrad Schlager and his wife Magdalena along with widow Maria Schlager and her children (Margretha, age 18; Johann Caspar, age 17; Johann Adam, age 8) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Anna's son [Johann] Kaspar is recorded on the 1798 census in the Volga German colony of Merkel in Household No. Mr18. Konrad & Magdalena are recorded on the 1798 Census in the neighboring colony of Dietel in Household No. Dt77.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Konrad Schlager came from the German region of the Pfalz.
