This is believed to be the same person as orphan Johann Konrad Waffel (age 19) who is recorded on the 1767 census of Grimm in Household No. 53 along with the Jost Bäcker family. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Waffel and Bäcker families.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Scherber/Zerber/Waffel family among the Volga German colonies.
Heinrich Groth, son of Heinrich Groth, was a leading activist for the re-establishment of a Volga German Republic in the latter days of the Soviet Union. He served as the secretary of the Coordinating Committee of Soviet Germans. He remained active in the causes of Germans from Russia. Heinrich Groth moved to Germany in 2003 and served as chairman of the Russlanddeutsche in Deutschland group there.
The Volga German ancestors of Heinrich Groth came from the daughter colony of Brunnental, and before that from Walter.
