Papp

Joachim Papp, a farmer, and his wife Elisabeth settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Tarlyk on 13 August 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 15.

In 1790, August Papp moved from Dinkel to Stahl am Tarlyk.

The death in 1831 of August Papp is recorded on the 1834 census of Stahl am Tarlyk in Household No. 105.

The 1767 census records that Joachim Papp came from the German village of Bentwisch in the Mechlenburg region.

Schmerig*

August Schmerig and his wife Maria Zimmerbecher are recorded on the 1798 census of Stahl am Tarlyk in Household No. St11.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.

Schäfer (Warenburg-6)*

Nikolaus Schäfer, a teacher (Lehrer), his wife Margaretha, and daughter Margaretha (age 2) are recorded on the 1767 census of Stahl am Tarlyk in Household No. 64 along with a note that they relocated to the colony of Warenburg in 1768. They had settled in Stahl am Tarlyk on 5 September 1767.

The 1767 census records that Nikolaus Schäfer came from the German region of Magdeburg.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Schäfer family among the Volga German colonies.

Eberle (Graf)

Franz Eberle was born in approximately 1789.  He served in Napoleon's army and fought against the Russians.  He was captured by the Russians, and in 1812, was settled in the Volga German colony of Graf.

He is recorded on the 1834 census of Graf in Household No. 22. He is recorded on the 1857 census of Graf in Household No. 29.

[One list of Napoleonic soldiers translates this surname incorrectly as Niederle.]

Bensak

Johannes Bensack was born in 1685 in Maisenhausen. He married Anna Maria (surname not known) who had been born in 1690.

Their son Christopherus Bensack was born in Maisenhausen on 1 November 1714. He married Anna Maria Bauer.

Their son Johannes Bensack was born 1 January 1739 in Wasserlos. He married on 18 May 1743 in Michelbach to Anna Maria (surname not known).

Bender (Semenovka)

Orphan Martin Bender (age 18), son of the deceased Johannes Bender, is recorded on the 1767 census of Semenovka in Household No. 20 along with the Paul Grau family. They had settled there on 24 July 1767.

Martin Bender from Semenovka and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Kamenka in Household No. Km004.

The death of Martin Bender in 1831 is recorded on the 1834 census of Kamenka in Household No. 49.

Welsch (Seelmann)

Peter Welsch, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Michael, age 8; Kunigunda, age 5; Barbara, age 3½; Margaretha, age ½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 16 August 1766 aboard a galliot named Die Wachsamkeit under the command of Skipper Jacob Heinrich Sager.

Peter Welsch, his wife Anna, and children (Michel [sic], age 9; Cunigunda, age 6; Barbara, age 5) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
