History: 

At one time, most of the inhabitants of Kokterek were Volga Germans.  Some had been banished to Koktrek in the 1930s as part of Stalin's kulak elimination program. Others were settled there during the 1941 deportation.

Most of the Volga Germans in Koktrek immigrated to Germany. Today, what remains of the village is called Birlik.
