Beginning in 1607, Gießen was located in the Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1806, during the Napoleonic Wars, it became part of the Grand Duchy of Hessne. In 1977, Gießen and the neighboring village of Wetzlar merged to form a new administrative city called Lahn.
