Hummel was founded on 14 July 1767 by colonists who had been recruited by Baron Caneau de Beauregard.
The 1767 census does not include a list of the original colonists in Hummel as they were residing in other colonies at that time.
Johannes Hummel (age 70) is recorded on the 1798 census of Hummel in Household No. Hm08. It appears that the colony got its German name from him.
Today, what remains of the colony of Hummel is known as Buyerak.
Hummel was originally part of the Lutheran parish headquartered in Bettinger. In 1820, it became part of the Näb parish.
In 1857, a wooden church was constructed in Hummel. It could seat 400 worshipers.
