Volga German families moved from the Volga River Valley to the Don River Valley in search of additional farm land.
The village of German Potapov (German: Deutsche Potapow) was founded in 1895 by colonists relocating from the village of Salfeld.
All ethnic Germans were deported from Potapov to the east in 1941 following the invasion of the Nazi Army.
