History

The Minneapolis / St. Paul Metropolitan Area includes all of Hennipen and Ramsey Counties as well as the northern parts of Dakota and Scott Counties and bodering communities in Washington & Anoka Counties in Minnesota and Pierce and St. Croix Counties in Wisconsin.

Volga German immigrants from Kautz and Schäfer settled in St. Paul after having first settled in Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Chicago. Many were working on the railroad, in the Union Stockyards, and in the Swift Company meat packing plant.

Through the years Volga German families have also moved into Minneapolis and can today be found in most of the suburbs of the Metro Area.

Riverview Neighborhood in St. Paul:

Most of the early Volga German families of St. Paul settled in the Riverview area, a neighborhood across the Mississippi River to the south of downtown St. Paul. It is bordered on the west, north, and east by the curving Mississippi River and Annapolis Street on the south.
